The distribution grid is among the most dynamic segments of the electric grid and it is becoming ever more complex with today’s growing DER networks and renewable generation on both sides of the customer meter. Distribution automation gives utilities and distribution system operators (DSO) enhanced control over and visibility into their grid and its performance. In addition to the transformation of the grid itself, customer and regulator requirements and expectations are evolving in a way that will further drive the market for distribution automation technologies.
This presentation will discuss key trends in the distribution automation market. The importance of integrating physical assets with communications and software will be highlighted and applications for large and small utilities will be discussed.
