The choice of a communication technology for your AMI network is a big one. The selected technology (or technologies) must be able to function reliably in the distribution network environment and terrain. It must meet the data needs of the utility: from the primary function of providing billing data to supporting more advanced tasks like demand management, distribution automation, and future applications. For some utilities, the best answer may not be a single technology, but a hybrid approach to align targeted solutions with specific needs.
Kyle Kopczyk is the Manager of Utility Automation at Power System Engineering and is a recognized subject matter expert on utility AMI and Smart Grid practices. In this session, he will provide an overview of the popular AMI communication technologies: including pros, cons, and considerations for each, as well as exploring when a hybrid approach offers the best fit.
